This month, the Independent Music Business series is getting technical! We know that not everyone who loves music wants to be on stage - some prefer working with their hands and/or their screens and that’s why we’re bringing you two of Ottawa’s most beloved techheads - Steve Foley and Calvin McCormick - to talk about their careers in production and gear respectively.
How did they get started? What do they love about their craft? What are the things that they would love artists to know when working with them? Learn what life is like on the other side of the board and your favourite equipment.
This session will be moderated by Martyna Turczynowicz, Programming Coordinator for the Ottawa Music Industry Coalition.
Steve Foley is the owner of Audio Valley recording studios in the east end of Ottawa where he’s been an engineer and producer since 2003 (though he’s been mixing since 2001). He has worked with artists diverse as hometown hero Kellylee Evans, rap superstars J-Cole, Flo Rida and Big Boi (of Outkast fame) and Carleton Place’s Brock Zeman as well as scores of local acts. Steve is committed to giving back to the local community, running informal instrument drives to support the local Boys & Girls Club and sitting on the Board of Directors of the Ottawa Music Industry Coalition where he’s currently serving as Vice President.
Calvin McCormick, originally from St. Catharines, has made himself indispensable to Ottawa’s music community since arriving a decade ago. In 2014 Calvin launched McCormick Analog, putting a brand and a logo on the work he’d been doing building effects pedals and amplifiers for Ottawa’s top musicians including New Swears and Annihilator as well as repairing even the trickiest of gear. Calvin’s also the bassist for Ottawa dirty rockers Onionface, does vox and guitar for Big Moan, guitar techs for Oshawa’s Crown Lands, and is a frequent friendly face behind the soundboard at LIVE! On Elgin where he makes so many of you sound so good.
