The Independent Music Business Series is a monthly free seminar and lecture series aiming to enrich the knowledge and expertise of artists, musicians and music service providers in the National Capital region. This month, join us for a session on Selling Music Online with Bandzoogle’s Dave Cool.

Dave Cool (yes, that’s his real name) is the Director of Artist & Industry Outreach at Bandzoogle. Built for musicians by musicians, Bandzoogle is used by over 35,000 musicians & bands to build their websites and manage direct-to-fan marketing and sales.

Dave has spoken at dozens of music conferences including SXSW, Canadian Music Week, SF MusicTech, and ASCAP EXPO. He has also been interviewed by The Economist, Newsweek International, CNN.com, and the Financial Post for his insights on the music industry.

In 2006, he directed and produced the documentary film "What is INDIE? A look into the World of Independent Musicians". Distributed by the National Film Board of Canada, it featured several leading experts in the music industry including the founders of CD Baby and Sonicbids. We asked Dave some questions to get to know him a little better:

What’s your favourite music memory?

As a music fan, by far it was to see the Foo Fighters perform at a small venue in Montreal (Foufounes Electrique) on their very first tour. I was actually way too young to get into the venue at that time, but thanks to a well-timed changeover with the door person, they didn't check my ID and I got to see the band while standing a few feet away from them (and even hung out with them backstage afterwards, it was a lucky night).

If you could spend a day with anyone in music, who would it be, and what would you do?

I'm fascinated and inspired by musician success stories. So I'd love to spend a day with successful DIY artists like Zoe Keating or Amanda Palmer to see how they spend their time, what they choose to work on/focus on, what tools they use, and why. 

What’s the most rewarding thing about the work you do?

Every job I've had in the music industry has been about helping musicians in some tangible way. Whether it was booking/programming artists for venues, helping give out monthly grants through CIRAA, and now curating content at Bandzoogle.  So when we get a lot of comments/shares/positive feedback on blog posts, webinars, or eBooks that we release, it always feels good to have helped musicians even just a little bit on their journey towards forging a career for themselves. 

Who is your favourite person to follow on social media and why?

I mainly use social media to keep up with the latest music industry news and advice for musicians. So I keep a close eye on Hypebot and Billboard for news, and accounts like Ari Herstand and Soundfly (and of course Bandzoogle - shameless plug!) for musician advice.
